Phishing Scams Now Include Phone Fraud
“Vishing” is the latest spin on “phishing”
Criminals have used “phishing” e-mails for some time to lure you into divulging your personal and financial information so they can use your identity. Now, there is a phone connection, referred to as “vishing”. In the latest variation, the e-mail asks you to call a telephone number. An automated response system answers the call and requests your confidential information.
Do not succumb to this trick!
Always call your bank and creditors at a phone number that is printed on your account statement, the back of your credit cards, in the phone book, or from some other reputable source.
Some examples of fraudulent e-mails include:
- Illegitimate offers—entice you to buy goods or services at low prices and never deliver the goods or services. Crooks try to obtain your credit card information with this scam.
- Requests for assistance—offer you a large amount of money or reward for financial assistance. For example, the sender offers to pay you to provide your account number so that you can hold money on deposit until they can retrieve it. The sender thus obtains your account information and never provides the promised funds.
